DEA wins state golf tournament

Led by low-medalist Gavin Harper, the David Emanuel Academy golf team won the Georgia Independent School Association state championship for the fourth straight year last Monday at The Rocky Creek Golf Club in Vidalia. Harper shot a one-over par 73 in leading the Eagles who finished with a team score of 311, one stroke better than region foe Thomas Jefferson Academy who came in at 312.

Freshman Caleb Morris, the two time region tournament low medalist, shot 76 with junior Will Smith coming in at 78 and Chase Hutcheson finishing at 84 to complete the DEA four player team score. Harper and Morris both made the All-State team with their scores and were joined by Colby Lamb (74) and Justin Williams (75) of Thomas Jefferson, Chase Reeve (75) and Josh O'Quinn (76) of Covenant Academy and Jack Wall of Oak Mountain Academy (75). This was the fourth All-State honor for Gavin Harper and the second for Caleb Morris.

The state championship was the sixth overall in school history as DEA took home the winners trophy previously in 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007. Coach Glenn Cardell's Eagles will be strong contenders to add another title next year as all members of this year's team are underclassman and are expected to return next year.

Following Thomas Jefferson, who improved 21 strokes from their region score, was Covenant Academy of Macon at 318 and Oak Mountain Academy of Carrollton at 321. The rest of the field included Westwood School (361), Robert Toombs Christian Academy (364), Nathanael Greene Academy (367), La- Grange Academy (369), Fullington (384), First Presbyterian Christian Academy (387), Terrell Academy (398), Crisp Academy (406), Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School (418), John Hancock Academy (420), Curtis Baptist High School (433), and Flint River Academy (445).
