Joseph "Joe" Beaumont, 81

TIFTON - Funeral services for Joseph "Joe" Beaumont, 81, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2008 in the Our Divine Saviour Catholic Church with Father Lorenzo Garcia officiating. Burial followed at Tift Memorial Gardens. He died Friday, April 25, 2008 of natural causes at his residence in Tifton following an extended illness.

Born on Aug. 16, 1926 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Mr. Beaumont was a retired funeral director and the retired Coroner of Tift County. He was the son of the late Evelyn Cocco Beaumont Bilodeau and Rene Bilodeau and was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Sue Beaumont; three brothersin law, Leon Evans, Al H. Evans Sr. and Cliff Hunter; and a nephew, Al H. "Dan" Evans Jr.

Mr. Beaumont attended New York City Public Schools and enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II, having served in the "Tin Can Navy" aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Adams in the Pacific Theatre and later in occupied Japan. He was awarded the Purple Heart for battle wounds received during the invasion of Okinawa when a Japanese kamikaze crashed into his ship. After the war, he graduated from the Columbia Radio Broadcasting School in New York and began a career in radio that brought him to Swainsboro, where he met his wife, Sally, whom he married on Dec. 13, 1951. Mr. Beaumont worked as a radio show host in Swainsboro's WJAT, Fitzgerald and Tifton, where he was known for his daily shows and live remotes. He later became involved in the funeral profession and was president of the former Tiftarea Funeral Home (now Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors) and, at age 55, graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service. He was elected Tift County Coroner for four terms beginning in 1988 until his retirement for medical reasons in 2005. He was a member of the American Legion; the VFW; the DAV; the Knights of Columbus; the Tifton Elks Lodge; the old Tifton Country Club; Springhill Country Club; the Georgia Funeral Directors Association; the Academy of Graduate Embalmers of Georgia; and the Georgia Coroner's Association. He had been a private pilot and member of the Civil Air Patrol and he enjoyed bird hunting, fishing on the flats in the Big Bend of Florida and taking care of his pets.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Evans Beaumont of Tifton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary B. and Tom Wynn of Fitzgerald and Gina B. and Dewey Mosher of Savannah; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Lori Beaumont of Tifton; a sister, Barbara Beaumont Hunter of Largo, Fla.; his grandchildren, Jake Dunn, Garner Stephens, Eric Dunn, Emily Stephens, John Michael Beaumont, Christina Mosher, Casey Mosher, Chloe Mosher, Diane and Josh French and Dawn and Frank Fegel; one great-granddaughter, Layla Dunn; his dogs, Leo and Charlotte; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. F. Morris Davis, Ken Martin, Tom Spampinato, Jim Smith, Gary Vowell, Bobby Brannen, Steve Wood, Chuck Cayton, Georgia coroners and funeral directors and his friends in public safety.
