Second Saturday Art Stroll to be held May 10 Swainsboro's monthly Second Saturday Art Stroll takes place May 10th from 5-8 p.m. in the downtown arts district. Gallery RFD (106 N. Green St.) proudly presents "Georgia Folks," a group exhibition of works by selftaught Georgia artists in the folk tradition. The core of the show, on generous loan from the private collection of Dr. William Norton of Metter, includes early works by the late Reverend Howard Finster (Summerville), the late Reverend R.A. Miller (Athens) and Wadley's own Willie Tarver. An avid collector and conversationalist, Dr. Norton regularly travels the Southeast's back roads in search of compelling work and treasures the stories he collects from the artists he meets as much as the art they produce. Representing the later generation of artists who follow in the footsteps of these three Georgia folk heroes is Athens-based Chris Hubbard, who pays homage to his elders with sculptural portraits Miller, Tarver, Finster and himself. The Georgia theme continues down the street at 114 West Main with a show by Athens artist, Peter Loose, who, like Hubbard, represents the next generation of folk artists. Loose's work includes whimsical paintings, sculptural instruments and his trademark snake-shaped dulcimers. To document her thirtieth year, photographer Ashley Howard shot one Polaroid image each day and another to represent each week. The resulting calendar, titled, "30th: A Year of Small Pleasures" features those 365 daily and 52 weekly images and is on view at the Emanuel Arts Council's Kalmanson Gallery (303 N. Green St.) This month's live music is the annual Battle of the Bands, in which groups compete for an audience choice award. Music begins at 8 p.m. on the Boneyard. As always, all Art Stroll events are free and open to the public. For further details contact Gallery RFD: www.galleryrfd.org
