Eagles win first tennis region championship
BY JAMES FERRY

The David Emanuel Academy Eagle Tennis team defeated Robert Toombs Christian Academy Crusaders this past Friday for the first Region Championship in boys tennis in school history. The Crusaders are the defending GISA State Champions. The match was a result of a tie at the end of the Region 2A Tennis Tournament. Coach Andy Sutton stated, "Three years ago we didn't field a complete team and now we're region champs. We are very proud of our boys for this accomplishment. They have worked very hard and had to battle through some adversity today." Gavin Harper, the Region Singles Champion, after falling down a set battled back to defeat Jon Owens 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. "Nothing was falling in the first set," commented Harper. He continued, "I decided to settled down and just hit with him. He started making mistakes and my shots started to fall." At number two singles, JR Whetsell walked over Tucker Outz, 6-0, 6-0. Whetsell said, "I'm glad I was able to contribute to the team effort. That's what really matters, Team Region Champions!" RTCA was able to tie the match early with a victory at number one doubles. Josh Owens and Jackson Sharpe defeated Marshall Blount and Hayward Johnson 3- 6, 3-6. The clinching match came down to two freshmen at number two doubles. Ridge Holland and Baba Gana battled for almost two hours to defeat Ryan Morley and Ethan Floyd 7-5, 6-4. "We knew we had them when they couldn't finish the first set," Holland said. Gana chimed in, "Yeh. We picked up the pace and started to just hammer on them and they couldn't stay with us." RTCA's Westin Robinson was winning over Kolo Gana 2-6, 4-5 when the match was stopped. Both Eagle tennis teams will compete for a team state title on Wednesday, April 30 at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta.
