The Swainsboro High School Concert Band earned all Superior ratings at the 2008 Georgia Music Educators Association Annual Large Group Performance Evaluation. A rating of Superior is the highest rating awarded. According to the GMEA, a grade of Superior denotes a division I rating which is worthy of distinction of being recognized as among the very best. The event was held March 12- 14 at Burke County High School in Waynesboro. A panel of three expert adjudicators evaluated the band's concert performance of three required selections. An additional judge then evaluated the band's sight reading ability. During this portion of the evaluation the band is given piece of music and must perform it without any prior rehearsal. A rating of Superior was awarded here as well. The band was evaluated in the areas of tone, intonation, technique, technical accuracy, flexibility, balance, interpretation, musical effect, and other factors such as stage presence and choice of music. The Swainsboro High School Band was one of only a very few bands in the tenth district to receive a superior rating at this event and in fact was the only AAschool to do so.
The Performance Evaluation program sponsored by the Georgia Music Educators Association is an evaluation procedure of musical performance and sight-reading abilities for individual students, performing groups, and teachers. Participation in this event affords valuable opportunity and motivation for learning during an extended period of time prior to the event as part of regularly scheduled work.
The goals of participation are:
1. To promote through evaluation, advice and suggestion, the development of musical knowledge as expressed in performance;
2. To raise the standards of musicianship, instrumentation, technical knowledge, and literature selection of performers; and
3. To offer students and teachers the opportunity of extended listening to the best work of peer groups from other schools.
Upcoming events for the band include the annual Spring Concert on May 6 at SHS and the Pine Tree Festival Parade on May 10.
