GA Cities Week Downtown

The Downtown Development Authority and The City of Swainsboro will host Swainsboro's GA Cities Week Celebration this Thursday from 5-8 p.m. GA Cities Week is a celebration of cities all across Ga with events happening across the state from April 20th to April 26th. This years theme "Living it Up Downtown" is geared toward a celebration of the unique role downtowns play in the history or culture of a town. The theme is especially relevant with the City of Swainsboro's decision to hire a Director of Downtown Development and refocus attention on Downtown Swainsboro.

This year's festivities will include a Tour by Mayor Charles Schwabe of Downtown with a talk geared toward the history of businesses and special relevance this region played on growth in Swainsboro. The Tour begins at 6 p.m. and is scheduled to last a halfhour. In addition, The City Hall Building will celebrate its 100th year with a Birthday Party and Open House featuring two exhibitions: one from Swainsboro Elementary School and the second of historical images and artifacts from the City's early years. The open house will begin at 5 p.m and end at 7 p.m.

Other events scheduled for Downtown will take place at the Downtown Square. Downtown Businesses will have booths on the Square selling and informing the public about what Downtown has to offer during the first annual Sidewalk Sale. Also on the Square, The Emanuel Arts Council, Inc. and Gallery RFD will hosts an event titled "Best of Open Mic Night" featuring area performers singing and reading poetry. Open Mic night has become a popular event held every other Monday at RFD and featuring up and coming talent both locally and from surrounding communities. "The Best of Open Mic" event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the Square.

For more information on this event and other programs slated for Downtown, please contact Downtown Development Director Anthony Faris at 237-7025.
