Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens Sheriff Stephens was elected sheriff in 1984 and took office January 01, 1985. Prior to his election as sheriff, he was a member of the Emanuel County Board of Commissioners and served as chairman. A lifelong resident of Emanuel County, he is the son of the late Hollis and Christine Stephens of Swainsboro. He is married to the former Susan Fagler, a teacher at Swainsboro High School. They have three children and three grandchildren. He and his wife are members of First Baptist Church of Swainsboro. The sheriff is an honor graduate of Swainsboro High School, attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia. Stephens is also a graduate of Leadership Georgia. He is an active member of the County Officers Association of Georgia, the National Sheriffs' Association, and past president of the Georgia Sheriffs' Association. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for both the Georgia Sheriffs' Association and Georgia Sheriffs' Youth Homes and serves on the board of trustees of Herrington Homestead. He is a member of the Control Group for the East Central Georgia Drug Task Force and has served as a Board Member for the Georgia Department of Corrections and as Chairman of the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council.
Sheriff Stephens states, "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as sheriff these many years. If reelected, I will continue to do my very best to serve all the citizens of this county in a professional, fair, and compassionate manner." Clerk of Court Jay Lawson Lawson is a lifelong resident of Emanuel County. He is the son of the late Ida Pearl Lawson and the late J. Carl Lawson. He is married to the former Ann Powell of Swainsboro. They are the parents of, Mrs. Greg (Andi) McKeever of Savannah and Jason Lawson who is married to the former Katie Carmichael of Swainsboro, residing now in Watkinsville. In addition, they are grandparents to Ericka Ann McKeever and looking forward to the arrival of a Lawson grandson in August. Jay attended public school in Emanuel County and graduated from Swainsboro High School in 1959. He attended the University of Georgia and graduated in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He joined the National Guard and served six years. In 1972, he was elected to the position of Clerk of Superior Court following the retirement of Hugh Coleman. He has served nine terms in this position. During his tenure, he has been active in the community as a Jaycee and chairmen of the Red Cross. He is a member of the Emanuel County Sportsman Club, a Mason in the Lodge #144 of Swainsboro and a former Shriner of the Swainsboro Shrine Club and the Alee Temple in Savannah. He is a member of the Emanuel Arts Council and a "Friend of the Franklin Memorial Library." He is a member of the Georgia Superior Clerks Association and the Constitutional Officers Association of Georgia. In 1993, he was selected Clerk of the Year for the Eighth Judicial District. He is a member of First United Methodist Church of Swainsboro and has served on the administrative board..
