Swainsboro to observe Georgia Cities Week The Swainsboro City Council held their monthly meeting on Monday, April 7, 2008 at 6 p.m. in City Hall. Swainsboro will observe Georgia Cities Week on April 24 with a downtown sidewalk sale, coloring contest and tours of downtown conducted by Mayor Schwabe. Also, City Hall will hold a 100 year celebration from 5-7 p.m. that day to celebrate its centennial. Anthony Faris, representing the Pine Tree Festival Committee, updated the council and requested road closings for the festival on Roger Shaw and Green Streets. Mr. Faris also reported the Downtown Cleanup Day successful. Building Inspector Bruce Kirby and Assistant Building Inspector Alton W. Lawson gave updates to the council on building department procedure and updated codes. Joan Dunn, representing the Emanuel Artist Guild, was met with no objections when she addressed the council about holding the Emanuel Arts Festival September 27, as well as closing Roger Shaw and Green Streets for the event. Councilman Stafford updated the council on the progress of the new police department, stating that the Department of Transportation is keeping them from moving in on schedule. Also of note: • The Pine Tree Festival Committee was granted their request for $5,000. • Rodney Kellum asked the Council to consider a Tree Ordinance. • The request from Arvind Patel for an alcoholic beverage application for beer and wine package only at the Mini Mart on 905 W. Main St., Swainsboro, was approved by Council for advertisement only. • Building Inspector Bruce Kirby reported that, from 16 derelict houses that have been targeted, 4 have been removed and another 8 will follow. • A motion was carried to accept the bid from Emanuel Tractor for both a tractor and a mower for use on right-of-ways and in cemeteries in the city if the specs meet requirements.
