John Gideon "Jack" Brown, 61

AUGUSTA - Funeral services for John Gideon "Jack" Brown, 61, were held on Friday, March 28, 2008 at First Baptist Church, Augusta, at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Greg De- Loach officiating. Burial was at 4 p.m. at the Twin City Cemetery with the Elder Michael R. Gray officiating. John Gideon "Jack" Brown, 61, died March 26, 2008 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Jack grew up in Twin City, Georgia and graduated from Emanuel County Institute. He attended the University of Georgia where he was an active member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and earned a degree in Agricultural Economics in 1971. After graduation he worked in his family business, Brown Bothers in Twin City. He moved to Augusta. and worked for the Bank of Augusta. He realized that he missed the outdoors, so began another career in real estate specializing in the management of raw land including timberland, farmland, commercial and various development and investment properties. He was an associate broker with Simkins Land Company. He was a dedicated member of the REALTOR organization, chaired and served on numerous committees, serving as President of the Young Council of Realtors in 1980, and President of the Augusta Board of Realtors in 1991. He received the H. Gould Barrett award for the most unique sale in the Augusta area in 1982, was selected as Realtor of the year in 1991, was the recipient of the President's Award in 1999, and was a Life Member of the Million Dollar Club.

Jack served as Regional Vice President of the Georgia Association of Realtors. He served on the State Board of Governors, served as the Associate Dean and Dean of the Georgia Realtors Institute from 1988-1996, was a state director for several terms and served as Federal Senate Coordinator for Senator Paul Coverdell. He was given a special resolution by the Board of Directors of the Georgia Association of Realtors at their annual meeting in 2001 for his dedication and professionalism displayed during his career as a Georgia Realtor.

Jack served as past President of the Augusta Golf Association, and Past President of Ducks Unlimited. He was a member of the Augusta Exchange Club, the Augusta Heritage Club, and the Augusta Country Club. Jack was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served on several committees, and a member of the Cason Bruker Bible Class.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Mariam Pierce Brown, two daughters, Helen Amanda Brown of Denver, Colorado and Mariam Leslie Taylor and her husband, Brian Kendrick Taylor, and their two children, John Ridge Taylor and Anna Pierce Taylor of Augusta, GA. Two brothers, William Rountree Brown, Jr. Twin City, GA. and Charles Henry Brown, Millen, GA. and three nephews.

Pallbearers were J. Dickey Boardman, Charles G. Caye, Jr., William B. Garrett III, Langdon D. Rivers, G. Bryan Simkins, Leroy H. Simkins, Jr., W. Tatnall Thompson, and William Weston IV. Graveside Pallbearers were Lawrence A. Atkinson, Charles Matthews Brown, James Riggs Brown, William Rountree Brown III, George W. Johnson, and John Whetsell. Honorary Pallbearers were the Augusta Golf Association, Exchange Club of Augusta, and the Holy Mackerel Poker Club.
