FCCLA competes in Evans
Participants begin working on their competition at the beginning of the school year and spend endless hours preparing their portfolio, display and oral presentation. Each participant must give an oral presentation that may be up to 10 minutes in length, along with a display or portfolio, depending on the requirements of their competition. Each participant is scored using a rubric based on their display or portfolio and their oral presentation. Students may receive a gold star, which is a score of 90 or higher, a silver star, 80-89 or a bronze star, 70- 79. Participants must score at least a silver star or higher to advance to State and only the top two participants in each category may advance to State competition. Whitney Calhoun, a junior member and president of the SHS chapter, competed in Career Investigation. Career Investigation is an individual event, recognizes participants for their ability to perform self-assessments, research and explore a career, set career goals, create a plan for achieving goals and describe the relationship of FACS coursework to the selected career. Whitney chose "Counseling Psychology" for her career and advances to state competition by scoring gold. Natasha Hidlebaugh and Whitney Jackson presented their project titled "Project Linus…making blankets one heart at a time" in the Chapter Service Project Display. "Project Linus" is a service project which makes blankets for infants and children who are ill or have been through a traumatic experience. Locally, SHS clothing and textiles students participate in Project Linus with Mrs. Hazel Anderson of the Holiday House and the Janome sewing group. Natasha and Whitney advanced to state competition by receiving a gold star. Stephanie Jones presented her project, "Sparkle with Fashion," as one of the new star events categories called Fashion Design. Stephanie chose fashion construction and completed an outfit for her seven year old cousin choosing eight design requirements, such as buttons, button holes and the type of hem. Stephanie received a gold star as well. Zach Henry and Trey Wiley competed in the area of Chapter Showcase Display in which they showcased their local chapter. Both participants discussed the many activities their chapter has participated in, as well as the national and state projects they have been involved in. "Lights, Camera, Action" received a silver star and both participants will advance to state competition with their chapter. STAR events are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills and occupational preparation. FCCLA STAR events program offers individual skill development and application of learning through cooperation of teams working together to accomplish goals, individuals working alone to accomplish specific goals and competition, which is measured by an established set of criteria.
