Raising up Godly children

You have heard it said that we need to put God back in our schools. I agree that we do need to put God first in our schools and teach the Bible as part of the academics. How can we expect to put God first in the schools if we are not putting God first in our own homes? We give our children all kinds of things: computers, video games, and cell phones. What they lack in their lives is the Bible. Whatever happened to praying with our children, sitting down after supper and reading from God's word to our children? Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it." Bringing up a child begins at home. As parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles we set the example by the way we live our lives as God has set forth in His word. If we do not live our lives as God has instructed us, how can we expect our children to? The old saying, "do as I say not as I do," just does not work. Children learn by example. Ephesians 6: 4 says, "And ye fathers provoke not your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The word nurture means "to train." The word admonition means "instruction." We need to train our children in God's instructions from the Bible. It is important that we teach our children how God teaches us to live our lives.

If not, I assure you the world will teach them how to live its way. Just look around you at what the world is teaching children. Today's video games that is full of violence teaches children that if they have a problem with someone, they should beat them up or worse. Jesus teaches to turn the other cheek. Matthew 5:39 says," But I say unto you, that you resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also." Some movies teach witchcraft and sorcery. The Bible clearly states in Ephesians 5:11"And have NO fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but children

rather reprove them." Children today need someone to look up to, as we might say, " A hero." So many people that they look up to today like those in sports are letting them down with drug use, alcohol and divorce. Children need people in their lives who are truthful, honest, upright and God fearing. Are we living the type of life that we would want our children to look up to or are we failing them to? So, let us pray for children all over the world. With all that is going on today to draw them from Christ they need all the prayers that we can lift up for them. The next time someone says to you, let us put God back in the schools, tell them let us first put God back in our homes and lives.

May God Bless.--Rev. Douglas Hutchinson, Pastor, Zaidee Advent Christian Church, Tarrytown.
