DEA's Lindsey impresses with speed David Emanuel Academy junior Derek Lindsey has always impressed people with his speed whether he was returning kicks on the football field or tracking down fly balls or running the bases on the baseball diamond. Since coming to DEA this school year he has discovered a new and perhaps more natural venue to show off his talents; track and field. In three meets this season, Lindsey has bettered his previous time in the 100 meter dash including a 10.81 showing in a meet at Robert Toombs last Wednesday. "I knew before I looked at the clock that Derek had broke 11 seconds," said DEA coach Andy Callaway who was timing the first place finishers in the meet. "When I looked at the stopwatch it showed 10.81. The coach from First Presbyterian came over from the other side of the finish line and actually had him at 10.79 which made me feel good about it being a legitimate time." The 10.81 time tops the GISA Class Astate record of 10.84 set back in 1986 by Valwood's Maury Copeland. Unfortunately Lindsey's time doesn't qualify as the new record. Times recorded at the state meet are the ones recognized for records. "Derek has his sights set on the record now," said Callaway. "He has been working with Coach Ferry on getting out of the starting blocks and his times have improved going from 11.5 in our first meet to 11.2 at the Gator Relays and then 10.8 last week. With his talent and work ethic combined with what he has demonstrated thus far, he has a better than average chance to put his name in the record books." 11.6 was the winning time in the 100 meter dash at the class A state meet last year. DEA had other winners as well in the meet at Robert Toombs. Amy Wells won the girls 100 meter run, John Mark Sweat won the 400 meter run, Miles Patterson won the 800 meter run and the boys 4X400 meter relay team of John Mark Sweat, Brandon Blount, Jordan Wiley and Ashton Lanier took first place. Second place finishers were Laura Cardell in the high jump and long jump and Jasmine Phillips in the 400 meter run. The DEA track team will return to action after their spring break this week with a meet at Briarwood in Warrenton on Tuesday April 2.
