Traffic on Lambs Bridge discussed---again Mary Smith and Michelle Goff from East Georgia College approached Emanuel County Commissioners Monday night to ask for assistance to study traffic issues on Lambs Bridge Road. They suggested a four-way stop at the intersection of the Lambs Bridge Road and Meadowlake Parkway while Georgia Department of Transportation conducts the study. Commissioners informed Smith and Goff that new speed limit signs have been ordered and are on the way. County Administrator Ezra Price also informed them that city and county officials will be discussing this issue next week. Ted Jones asked commissioners to urge local legislators and representatives to study a Multiple Employer Trust program for insurance for small business owners. He said South Carolina had recently passed an MET policy and Jones was wondering why Georgia could not do the same. Walt Yeomans was present and told commissioners that such a policy was "not easy" and that Congress was currently engaged in a "huge battle" with the healthcare issue. However, Yeomans said that he would research the program and report back to commissioners in three weeks. A public hearing was held for an ordinance to regulate use of public roads by timber companies. A motion was made and approved to waive a second hearing of the reading of the ordinance. The ordinance passed unanimously. The new ordinance goes into effect May 1. Becky Clifton of Emanuel County Health Department asked commissioners to approve new environmental inspection fees due to rising fuel costs. New soil and water system permits will be raised from $50 to $75; evaluations, from $20 to $35; and swimming pool inspections, from $50 to $75. Due to lack of funds, commissioners approved road projects that are maintenance-related only. Paving will be done on Briarcliff Road, Lambs Bridge Road and Pendleton Springs Road, including other locations in need of repair. Striping will be done Key's Mill Pond Road and Wadley Coleman Lake Road. Commissioners also reminded county residents that repairs on roads damaged by bad weather were being conducted. Commissioners also commended Road Superintendent Larry Womack for his work on county roads. In other business, commissioners approved the following: • A $1,067 request from Bill Rogers Jr., president of Swainsboro-Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce, to finance a VIP tour of the county on April 24. Delegates from all over the world will be visiting and staying at Flat Creek Lodge. • $5,000 for the Swainsboro Emanuel County Festival Foundation, Inc. for the 2008 Pine Tree Festival. • Vernon Hardy for a position on the Region Five MHDDAD board. • Authorized Administrator Price to seek bids for two tractors and two mowers. SPLOST funds will be used for the purchase.
