Drivers, obey the law!

DEAR EDITOR:

It is every driver's responsibility to adhere to Georgia Law. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Failure to yield to pedestrians can result in certain consequences. 40-6-390.(a) states, "Any person who drives any vehicle in reckless disregard for the safety of persons or property commits the offense of reckless driving." 16-5- 20.(a) states, "A person commits the offense of simple assault when he either: (1) Attempts to commit a violent injury to the person of another, or (2) Commits an act which places another in reasonable apprehension of immediately receiving a violent injury." 16-5-21.(a) states, "A person commits the offense of aggravated assault when he or she assaults: (2) With a deadly weapon or with any object, device, or instrument which, when used offensively against a person, is likely to or actually does result in serious bodily injury."

Drivers, beware; obey the law. Don't place yourselves in a situation which could result in the committing of one of these offenses. Drivers of Swainsboro, Emanuel County, and drivers everywhere please remember, at one time or another, you're a pedestrian, too. A little courtesy goes a long way, and it doesn't cost you anything. Remember what it's like to be on foot, and how much you appreciate it when a motorist stops for you. I pray none of us ever hits a pedestrian with a vehicle. If you do, God help you. I just hope that pedestrian isn't me.
