DR. PAUL CERPOVICZ, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY AT EAST GEORGIA COLLEGE, DEMONSTRATES PRINCIPLES OF HEATING AND COOLING, WITH THE HELP OF SWAINSBORO PRIMARY SECOND GRADE STUDENTS, KELSEY SELLERS (LEFT) AND DYLAN COXWELL
Swainsboro Primary School's second grade students visited East Georgia College on Tuesday, Feb. 12. The students are the second group of four different schools participating in a "Second Grade College Exploration Day 2008" Initiative in collaboration with Emanuel County School System. Four classes of SPS students visited on this Tuesday, with other second grade classes visiting from Adrian and Twin City on different Tuesdays in February. David Emanuel Academy's (DEA) second grade students will also visit on an upcoming Tuesday.

Students are being welcomed to campus by President John Black and are learning about the importance of perseverance in education as illustrated by the "ladder of success" to college. Students are also participating in different activity sessions. They are making pinch pots with Dr. Dee McKinney; visiting a StarLab, a portable planetarium with Kathy Gunn; attending a boomerang demonstration with Dr. John Derden; learning about health and physical fitness with Johnna Ware; and participating in biology and chemistry experiments with John Smoyer and Dr. Paul Cerpovicz, all of East Georgia College. The EGC Bobcat mascot and Katie Jessica Best, Miss EGC, also visit with the students during lunch and throughout the visit. "Second Grade College Exploration Day" is an annual event for Emanuel County second graders and is a hugh success due to the efforts of the teachers and students of Emanuel County and the EGC faculty and staff.

"This experience has been wonderful and has provided a meaningful opportunity for our students to better understand the many options avail- able to them beyond their K-12 experience. We appreciate East Georgia's willingness to engage our young students with such a positive and meaningful study experience," added Jean Schwabe, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction at Emanuel County Schools.

The student's comments have been very positive and included, "I loved the EGC Bobcat and the Boomerang man," "I want to come to college here," and "I learned a lot."

The second grade students also receive an EGC "bobcat" teeshirt, a boomerang, and a certificate from President Black, which entitles them to free parking for a year on the East Georgia College campus when they enroll for their freshman classes in 2018.
