Arts in Emanuel
The arts: On the move in Emanuel
Joan Dunn

On January 26, the Emanuel Arts Council presented a free concert in Stillmore. Board members Jeb Cameron, Alan Brasher and Ron Ellison entertained a full house with country and bluegrass music. These traveling troubadours may turn up in your town. More concerts of this type are being planned.

Also on the move, the Open Mic Night has relocated to the Gallery RFD. Offering opportunities for area musicians to perform, the event also gives people a chance to enjoy live music. Due to time constraints, musicians are asked to arrive early in order to be put on the evening's schedule. Occurring ever other week, Open Mic Night will next happen on February 18 beginning at 7pm.

Speaking of trips, EAC Travels was headed in a totally different direction. Instead of taking the performance to them, Emanuel Arts took local people to the Fox Theatre in Atlanta where participants saw a performance of "The Drowsy Chaperone." Tickets were purchased at a group rate by the EAC and sold at the reduced price. Transport was arranged through the efforts of the EAC. Plans for more trips of this type are being made.

Traveling to Emanuel County in March and April, Theatre IV of Richmond, Virginia will present two performances in the EAC's LaPetite Series for Young Audiences. One of the largest touring companies for children's theater, Theatre IV performances are seen by about 2 million children each year. Performed in the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Auditorium on March 4 at 9 am and 1 pm, Buffalo Soldier which chronicles the life of one of these soldiers is based on true stories. Overlooked by history and especially television westerns, Buffalo soldiers were regiments made up of entirely black soldiers which were instrumental in the expansion of the American frontier after the Civil War. This presentation is geared to middle school and high school aged students. For younger children, The Ugly Duckling, based on the Hans Christian Anderson story, will be performed on April 23 and 24. Go to EmanuelArts.org and click on Events, then LaPetite Series to learn more about these performances. You can also learn more by clicking on the teacher's guide which is available for each performance. Call Emanuel Arts at 478-237-2592 for more information.. Funding for this event has been provided by the Mill Creek Foundation and the Southern Federation for the Arts.

Each month, artists and performers come to Swainsboro to participate in the Second Saturday Art Stroll. Various venues for the event attract many artists and musicians, which in turn draws visitors to our community who meander throughout our downtown enjoying the art. For the recent February Stroll, the concert featured Josh Roberts and the Hinges from Columbia, SC. Not only did they travel here to entertain us, they kept us moving with their rocking music.

So with all coming and going, moving and grooving, Emanuel Art is a vibrant experience--not confined or restrained to one building or idea of art.

Joan Dunn is an artist, member of the Emanuel Arts Council Board of Directors and President of the Emanuel Artists Guild. She is interested in learning about creative arts efforts throughout the area. Contact her at joan-of-art@nctv.com.
