STAR students and teachers announced

STAR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS
Meagan Williams from Swainsboro High School has been named Emanuel County's STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student System Winner. This announcement was made at the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet held at East Georgia College on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. Meagan selected Judy Williams as her STAR teacher.

Amanda Akridge Rigdon from Emanuel County Institute and Lauren Patterson from David Emanuel Academy were also honored at the STAR Recognition. Glenn Turner and Sally Grover were respective STAR teachers nominated by Amanda and Lauren.

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program, in its 50th year, is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education. Students are selected on the basis of their SAT scores and class standing/ scholastic averages.

STAR begins each year in participating high schools throughout Georgia when the STAR student is named and chooses a STAR teacher to share in this recognition. The students and their teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from more than 200 statewide civic organizations and businesses that sponsor local programs. Students then compete for school system titles, and those winners compete for region honors.

The PAGE Foundation also sponsors academic competitions for students including the PAGE Georgia Academic Decathlon (GAD) and the PAGE Academic Bowl for Middle Grades. Through its sponsorship of Future Educators of America in Georgia (FEA in GA), Student Professional Association of Georgia Educators (SPAGE) and PAGE Foundation Scholarships, the PAGE Foundation works to recruit capable people to the teaching profession and provide career-long professional learning opportunities for educators.

The local STAR Recognition is sponsored by the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce and Jerry N. Cadle Law Firm.
