New transfer station completed

NEW TRANSFER STATION
The construction of the new Emanuel County Solid Waste Transfer Station has been completed. One year ago, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division forced the Emanuel County Board of Commissioners to build a new Transfer Station that would handle the disposal of solid waste using operating guidelines as set forth by EPD. Prior to 2007, operating procedures for county transfer stations were not enforced by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

"Beginning in 2007, the EPD decided that it was in their best interest to enforce State laws governing the operations of transfer stations throughout Georgia," said Ezra Price, county administrator. "Most county landfills were closing, therefore enforcing solid waste laws governing transfer stations would help to justify their presence in Emanuel County. The new facility is designed to handle Emanuel County solid waste for many years to come."

Emanuel County closed its landfill in 1996 and contracted with Broadhurst Environmental, Inc. to transport and dispose of solid waste from Emanuel County which includes the solid waste from all the Municipalities within the County as well. Currently, all waste from Emanuel County is loaded and transported to a Landfill in Jesup.

OLD TRANSFER STATION
The county then constructed a Transfer Station in 1996 that was too small and operations would not handle the increased solid waste disposal needs and satisfy EPD operating procedures. The county transfers 67 tons of solid waste from households and industry located within the county daily or 23,000 tons of trash annually.

"Collection and disposal of Emanuel County solid waste is big business," concluded Price. "The annual budget for the trash collection and removal in Emanuel County is $1,200,000."

The Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) has provided the funds to construct the new facility.
