Gomez to exhibit art at Kalmanson

GOMEZ
Emanuel Arts Council's February Second Saturday Art Stroll at the Kalmanson Gallery features photographs by Emily Jurkiewicz Gómez. The exhibition will begin with a reception, hosted by the Swainsboro Evening Optimist Club, from 5-8 p.m. on Feb. 9. The exhibit will continue through Feb. 29.

Gómez is originally from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She received her B.A. in Fine Arts/Photography from Loyola University Chicago in 1998. After graduation, she went on to be employed as the Staff Photographer for a Metropolitan Detroit Area News Group, SCN Communications, for five years. In 2003, she and her husband, Ernesto, moved to Athens in order for Emily to pursue her M.F.A. degree. She earned her M.F.A. (with Distinction) from the University of Georgia in 2006.

Gómez is currently an assistant professor of art at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville. She and her husband are adopted members of the Santee Indian Nation of South Carolina.

She says, "My work is driven by my search to uncover the past- to find evidence of what was here before us and to educate others and myself about the history of our continent that we rarely learn in school. I feel that by unearthing the facts of our past and by admitting that what we did was wrong, we can begin to change the way we treat one another, both at home and abroad."
