SMS band selected for Georgia Honor Band

SMS HONOR BAND
Twelve outstanding Swainsboro Middle School band members were selected for membership in the 2007-08 University of Georgia Honor Band. Students auditioned against other middle school band students from across the state for selection in this event.

The students selected were Sierra Crowe (flute), Anna Ellis (flute), Kellie Henry (flute), Lauren Murphy (oboe), Adam Sherrod (bass clarinet), Tyler Brown (tenor sax), Randall Packer (trumpet), Drew Cann (french horn), Michael Muns (euphonium), Justin Geller (tuba), and Kyle Henry (tuba). They were selected from over 1800 eligible musicians from all over the state of Georgia.

Once the students arrived at the festival they auditioned against 900 students for chair placement within the bands. All of these middle school students were selected as some of the best players on their instruments in the state of Georgia with Lauren Murphy and Tyler Brown honored as the #1 players on their instruments within their bands.

In addition, Michael Muns was selected to participate in the top honor band which was directed by noted band composer Quincey Hillard. Mr. Hillard wrote a piece of music for this band which they premiered at the final concert.

SMS Band director, Dr. Gene Hundley stated that he was very proud of the outstanding work of these students. "These twelve band members are some of the kids that want to really excel on their instrument and are willing to go the extra mile to be truly outstanding players. My hat is off to them and I congratulate them for this as well as thank them for the great job they do each day for our band. I also would like to thank the Band Parents, the Swainsboro Band Boosters, the administration at Swainsboro Middle School as well as Superintendent Butch Frye for their support of music in Emanuel County Schools."
