Council proposes going 'tobacco-free'
By JACQUIE BRASHER

At its meeting Monday, Feb. 4, Swainsboro city council authorized City Administrator Al Lawson to create an ordinance that would designate all city buildings and vehicles as "tobacco-free." This ordinance would prevent city employees not just from smoking cigarettes but also chewing tobacco. Lawson will present the ordinance at the next meeting in March.

Mayor Schwabe informed council that Attorney John Thompson, representing Sammy Anderson, owner of Omega Club, had requested the purchase of a business license for a private club. Council members discussed that there was no such ordinance and requested more information on what exactly Anderson planned to do. Administrator Lawson explained that Anderson wanted to "rent the club out for birthday parties." Police Chief Johnny Shuman said that, in his opinion, this request was a "thinly disguised attempt to get around the purchase of an alcohol beverage license." Fire Chief Mike Strobridge also told council that the Omega Club falls under certain fire codes that would have to be cleared before such a change could take effect. Mayor Schwabe asked Administrator Lawson to draft a letter to inform Anderson that such a license did not exist, but that council would study the issue further.

Council approved Downtown Development Director Anthony Faris' request to seek grant funding to revitalize the Food Pantry and the building next to it (213 and 215 West Main Street.)

Also approved were the following:

• Hiring David Way for the position as detective at Swainsboro Police Department.

• Hiring James Anthony Ward for the position of firefighter at Swainsboro Fire Department.

• Extending the roadonly city limit sign from Lambs Bridge Road to Tiger Trail.

• Repair of Pump Station #4 at a cost of $25,536.

• Purchase of a color copier for City Hall at a cost of $5,844.

• Other budgeted item approved were:

• $5,000 for Emanuel County Historic Preservation Society.

• $10,414.50 for Emanuel Arts Council.

• $1,000 for Emanuel County Relay for Life.

• $5,000 for Access Emanuel.
