Good Shepherd welcomes Rev. Ron Southerland

REV. SOUTHERLAND
Good Shepherd Episcopal Church welcomed the Rev. Ron Southerland as their new vicar Sunday, Jan. 6. The Rev. Southerland retired December 31 after serving the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation in Vidalia for 18 years. He moved back to his childhood home of Macon and will travel to Swainsboro each Sunday to celebrate the Holy Eucharist at Good Shepherd.

The Rev. Southerland graduated from the University of Georgia in 1965 with a major in Forestry and Wildlife Management. He worked in that field for a while before moving to Tennessee where he worked in a copper mine at Copper Hill. He then answered his call to the ministry and attended seminary at the University of the South in Sewanee. He served one year as a deacon at First Timothy in Signal Mountain, then went on to serve as a priest for five years in Memphis, followed by five years in Winchester. He moved back to Georgia and served the Diocese of Georgia for seven years as a supply priest before beginning his time at the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation in 1989.

Church members hosted a reception for the Rev. Southerland following church services Jan. 6. Good Shepherd is located at 621 West Main Street in Swainsboro.
