Derden to lead 'Sherman's March'

DR. DERDEN
Dr. John K. Derden, emeritus professor of history at East Georgia College, will conduct a tour of sites associated with Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's 1864 march through east central Georgia on Saturday, Feb. 9. The tour will begin at 9 a.m. with a pre-trip orientation in Room C- 240 of the Academic Building at East Georgia College.

Sherman's March to the Sea was one of the central events of the American Civil War. Praised by some as a valuable step in hastening the end of the bloody conflict, and by others as a barbaric act, the march left indelible memories in the minds of civilians and combatants alike.

Since 1989, Dr. Derden has conducted this tour of Sherman's March. In recent years, Dr. Derden has expanded the scope of the tour with a living history component. Participants will learn about the significant sites- Union campsites, Camp Lawton, Big Buckhead Church- and hear local anecdotes related to the march through east central Georgia. Lunch and transportation are included with your trip fee. The tour will end with a return to the East Georgia College campus by 6 p.m.

Anyone with an interest in the Civil War or local history, members of local historical societies, or those just looking for an interesting outing are welcome. Past tours have included people of all ages. Dr. Derden guarantees participants a fascinating journey into our Civil War past!

Sponsored by the Department of Continuing Education at East Georgia College, the tour fee (which includes all expenses) is $70.00 ($80.00 after January 26, 2008). If interested, contact the Department of Continuing Education at (478) 289- 2108.
