Learning from the past, Living 4 Today
By KATELYN MOORE

CLAYTON H. PRUETT, JAMES MCCOY, CINDY SCHMIDT, JAMES KERSEY, DANIEL MCCOY, MRS. JOEL KEA, MARILYN MIMBS, MARY ALICE HORTON.
When one first meets Cindy Schmidt, her nononsense attitude and firm way of speaking betray nothing of her past struggles. She has seen more than her share of hardships and struggled with addictions of all kinds. But she has overcome, and now she is determined to share her experiences and help others on their long road to freedom.

Starting Feb. 4, Schmidt will head a support group for people in Adrian and the surrounding areas who are struggling with addiction and ready for a new way of life. The non-profit group, Living 4 Today, will meet ever Monday and Thursday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Adrian Community Center.

Schmidt says the group will focus primarily on group discussion of struggling with addiction and different ways to overcome it. She will share different ideas and paths to follow to triumph over addiction, both from personal experience and from different addiction support group publications.

Appearing before the Adrian City Council armed with only ideas and letters of encouragement, Schmidt appealed to them for approval to start the group at the City Council meeting Monday, Jan. 7.

Her proposal was accepted and, according to Schmidt, she has received overwhelming support for the program, including the donation of the Adrian Community Center for the group's use four nights a week. She will start the program on Monday and Thursday night meetings, working up to the full four nights when the need arises. She also will offer support by phone, insisting that people can call her at any time of the day or night at home at 478-668-3547 or on her cell phone at 478- 299-0337.

"I don't care if only three people come," Schmidt says of the meetings. "That's three people for this hour that are safe and alive and trying to learn a new way of life."

Also involved in the project are Clayton H. Pruett, an Adrian mayoral candidate; James McCoy; James Kersey, head of city maintenance; Daniel Mc- Coy, chief of police; Joel Kea, another Adrian mayoral candidate; Marilyn Mimbs, city councilwoman; and Mary Alice Horton, city clerk.

Please contact Cindy Schmidt at 478-668-3547 or by e-mail at living4todayin2008@ yahoo.com to learn more about Living 4 Today or to make a donation to the group. All donations will be used for supplies, learning material, pamphlets, etc.
