Shriner elected to the highest office
The Alee Shriners membership totals 1,980 members at the present. This jurisdiction covers some 32 counties from Savannah to Brunswick to Augusta. There are a total of three other Potentates elected each year in addition to the Shrine Center in Savannah. There are currently approximately 13,500 Shriners in the entire state of Georgia. The purpose of the Shriners is to raise money to support the 22 Shriners hospitals throughout North America. They treat burned and crippled children from birth to age 18 at no cost to the families regardless of their financial status or race. Any child that qualifies under the scope of the treatments allowed by the Imperial Council of the Shriners of North America that was established 85 years ago. The hospitals do not have cash registers at all and they take insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid as payment. It is totally free to the family. The local Shrine Club this past year raised over $35,000 to donate to the hospital because of the generous and caring community that Emanuel county is. It should be noted that 100% of the money collected each year goes straight to the hospitals. The annual dues and other project money is used for the operation and upkeep of the Shrine Club. Emanuel County has supported the local club's efforts for over 50 years. Emanuel County also had a local member to become Potentate in 1988, L.C. "Shot" Strange from Oak Park. It is indeed an honor to have another local Shrine member to reach this status with the fraternity. Congratulations to Mack on achieving this high honor with Alee Shriners.
