Jenkins is grand marshal

JENKINS
Donald Jenkins has been chosen the 2008 Grand Marshal for the annual Martin Luther King Day Parade on Monday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. in downtown Swainsboro.

Jenkins is a native of Emanuel County and graduated from the public school system in 1968. He is married to Erma F. Jenkins, assistant superintendent for Emanuel County School System. They have three children and two grandchildren. The Jenkins' are members of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Summertown, where he serves as Steward.

He has worked in the Emanuel County School System for 33 years as an elementary teacher and high school administrator. He is a graduate of Fort Valley State University with a degree in Music Education. He holds fifth and sixth year degrees in Educational Leadership from GA Southern University. He was principal of the Academy of Career Sciences from 1997 until 2003. He is currently Assistant Principal and director of Careers Programs at Swainsboro High School.

During his tenure on Swainsboro City Council, Jenkins has served as the chairman of Swainsboro- Emanuel County Recreation Dept., Swainsboro Fire Dept., Swainsboro- Emanuel County Airport, Swainsboro Police Department, Special Projects, and in his capacity as Mayor ProTem, chairman of the Administrative Deptartment.

His current affiliations include both Foundation Boards of East Georgia College and Swainsboro Technical College, member of Franklin Memorial Library Board, member of the board of Emanuel Arts Council, and the Union Gospel Singers. Jenkins served 12 years on Emanuel County Hospital Authority, was a charter member of Swainsboro Evening Optimist Club and the 1993 Leadership Emanuel class. He is also regular performer of Emanu'Ole Opry and a member of the Emanuel Association of Educators, Georgia Association of Educators and National Educational Association.
