Tigers dominate Tigers and Gamecocks
BY JIM WILLIS
"It's about playing together as a team," Head Coach Leroy Jordan commented on Swainsboro High Tigers recent success. After going on a sixgame skid the Tigers defeated two straight region opponents over the weekend. Swainsboro defeated Metter High Friday night and region powerhouse Screven County on Saturday night to improve to 2- 1 in the region and 4-6 overall. "Screven County is one of the top teams in our region." Coach Jordan said. "Winning this game should show the fans that the team has united and we are ready to play basketball."

13 Tigers scored on Friday night in Metter. Tony Mitchell led the way with 31 points. The Senior, who will continue his basketball career at the University of Alabama next year scored 27 points in the first half and was a nightmare for the Metter Tiger defense all night. Swainsboro played an attack style defense to create fast break opportunities for Mitchell. Swainsboro was in complete control from the tip to finish.

Coach Jordan was able to cruise to a victory and allowed all the underclassmen to play the fourth quarter. Fabian Maples, Courtney Williams, Bryant King, Maurice Strong and Edwin Jones all played the entire fourth quarter. "It was a good experience for the ninth and tenth graders to get out and be able to play a competitive quarter of basketball on this level," Coach Jordan replied.

Screven County 54, Swainsboro 70

In front of a packed house in Swainsboro on Saturday night the Tigers embarrassed region leader, Screven County Gamecocks. Mitchell began the game with a dunk and there was a feeling that it was going to be a long night for the Gamecocks. Swainsboro was able to stick to their game plan and play a relaxed style defense which, is out of the ordinary for Coach Jordan. The veteran coach usually likes to press his opponents and force them into critical mistakes early on in the game. However, on Saturday night Coach Jordan did not play a press defense all night.

As usual Mitchell posted the high for the team at 23 points. Senior Byron Foots had 15 points. Recent Florida A&M recruit Cecil Bent scored 10 points and dominated the paint on both sides of the court for the Tigers.

Swainsboro will play four straight home games over the next two weeks. On Friday, the Tigers will continue region play as they host T.W. Josey Eagles at 8:45 p.m. Saturday night Swainsboro will play the Westside Patriots. Tip is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. in Swainsboro. Tickets are $5 and the Lady Tigers will play prior to the boys' games.
