Swainsboro High School hosts third Annual Matthew Anders Memorial

The Swainsboro High School Mat Catz and Wrestling Team hosted the 3rd Annual Matthew Anders Memorial (5th overall) wrestling tournament at East Georgia College. Teams from all across the state participated in this year's event. Glynn Academy from Brunswick, Georgia took home the team championship this year. Other local teams had a great showing. Toombs County, Swainsboro, and Dublin also finished in the top 10. Yulee, Florida made the long trip up to take home the 11th spot in the tournament. Swainsboro had five placers in this year's tournament. Nigel Cason (160lb) and Derrick Shuemake (285lb) placed 2nd in the MA Tournament. Clayton Faircloth (130lb), Brandon Fields (135lbs), and Hunter Gay (215lb) captured 3rd place finishes as well.

Coach Jernigan would like to thank some special people in making this year's tournament such a success. "First and foremost, I want to give God the Glory and Honor for all His Blessings in my life and in this community. I would also like to thank the Anders, Smith, and Moore family for their continued support and effort in honoring Matthew's enthusiasm and accomplishments in the sport of wrestling. I would like to that Mrs. Leslie Johnson and her entire family for their dedication to the program. Mrs. Johnson has created and runs the best wrestling mat girl program in the state. I would also like for the community to remember and pray for Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and her family as she undergoes surgery this week. I would also like to give special thanks to the SMS/SHS/EGC wrestling coaching staffs and their spouses for their continued support. East Georgia College also deserves recognition for the outstanding commitment to the youth in our community. The staff and faculty at East Georgia College are second to none. They are fully committed to providing the best experience for everyone at every event that is hosted by the school. The Forest Blade for their coverage of the wrestling program. I appreciate the school administration for providing the opportunity for these young student/athletes to participate in the sport of wrestling. Last but not least, I would like to give my wife and family the credit that they rightly deserve. I appreciate the hours that they spend tending to the daily family routines in my absence. I do not tell you enough how much I love and appreciate you for your support in my coaching profession."

Please take note of the 2007-2008 schedule and come out and support the SMS/SHS wrestling programs.
