Remains of missing woman found
By JACQUIE BRASHER

MOORE
The skeletal remains of a woman missing for four years has been found on land about two miles from where she first disappeared on June 16, 2003. Last Wednesday, Sheriff Tyson Stephens said he received a call from a timber company that was clearing land about two miles away from the Oak Grove community near Modoc where Verdell Moore was reported missing in the summer of 2003.

"We have been investigating (this case) all this time," said Sheriff Stephens. Initial searches in 2003 included air, foot patrol, canine units and four-wheelers, all of which turned up no clues to her disappearance. Moore, who lived on New Street in Swainsboro, owned some livestock in the Oak Grove community and was last seen in that area on June 15, 2003. "We had received information at that time that there was possibly foul play involved," said Sheriff Stephens.

Although the Sheriff said that there had been no "official notice" that the remains are that of Moore, "the skeletal remains are of a female and a purse with (Moore's) identification" was also found. The Sheriff said he believed the remains to be Moore.

"I'm happy that her family can now have this closure," said Sheriff Stephens. "We will continue to pursue this is as a homicide investigation." Moore's remains are at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta.

Anyone with additional information about this case may call Sheriff Stephens at 237-7526.
