Alvin Douglas Kent, 88

MCRAE--Funeral for Alvin Douglas Kent of Swainsboro, 88, will be held Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Andersonville National Cemetery with full military honors. Burial will follow the service. He died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007 at McRae Manor Nursing Center in McRae after an extended illness.

Mr. Kent was native of Anderson County, S.C. He was a member of the Island View Baptist Church in Orange Park, Fla., Wesconnett Masonic Lodge #297 F&AM, The VFW, and the USS Hornet Club. He had a special passion for the USS Hornet CV-8, which was the ship that carried the General Doolittle's "B-24" bombers to bomb Tokyo Japan early in the war. He worked on the flight deck and helped gas and look after the planes on the trip over. He was on board her the day she was sunk. He retired after 20 years in the Navy, serving in World War II, Korean Conflict, Greek Uprising, and Vietnam.

Survivors include a son and daughter in law, Thomas and Melanie Kent of St. Augustine, Fla.; two daughters and one son-inlaw, Marlys and Sonny Koski of Mt. Vernon; and Kimberly Kent of Palm Beach, Fla.; a sister, Doris Rachwell of East Point; and two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Stewart Funeral Service of Vidalia has charge of the arrangements.
