City to raise garbage rates next year

On Monday, Dec. 3 at its last meeting for the 2007 year, Swainsboro city council voted to raise garbage service rates next year. Council members, with the exception of John E. Parker, voted to raise residential rates by 10 cents and commercial rates from $3.10 to $3.71. (Parker suggested raising commercial rates only.) Businesses will have the option of having garbage and cardboard hauled once or twice a week.

In other business, council approved the motion to fund $1,800 for the Martin Luther King Day Parade in January. This is a budgeted item.

Council approved the ordinance to amend the Zoning Code to change the signage regulations for the Downtown Historic District.

Council approved the amendment to the Utilities Code (Section 102-104) as requested by OMI, Inc., in order to comply with Federal Pretreatment Standards.

Council authorized Administrator Al Lawson to seek bids on the Downtown Streetscape Improvement project. This DOT and city funded project will update downtown sidewalks to make them more pedestrian-friendly as well as beautify the area.

Council approved the motion to commend the Emanuel County Institute Bulldogs for its winning season.
