Joe Oliver Lumley, 77

ADRIAN--Funeral for Joe Oliver Lumley, 77, was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007 in Poplar Springs United Methodist Church with Rev. Betsy Caudill and Rev. John J. Hinton officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors. He died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007.

Mr. Lumley was born in Jeff Davis County and was the son of the late Luther Joe and Ruby Gillis Lumley. He retired from the United States Army after 22 years of service and was a retired truck driver. He was a former member of the Adrian City Council and was currently serving as Mayor of Adrian. He was a member of Poplar Springs United Methodist Church, Adrian.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Gwendolyn Hutcheson Lumley; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Vera L. Pagan, of Savannah, Karen and Scott Sammons, of Chickamauga, Denise and Chuck Bass, of Dublin, and Leslie and Tony Thigpen, of Mitchell; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Jimmy Lumley, of Adrian, and Jarrell and Joyce Lumley, of Adrian; nine grandchildren, Joe Stephens, Keith Stephens, Whitney Bass, Kami Bass, Katie Pagan, Jessie Pagan, Hannah Thigpen, Maggie Thigpen and Georgia Kate Sammons; and one greatgrandson, C.J. Stephens.

An army unit from Fort Stewart served as active pallbearers. Honorary escorts included Daniel Mc- Coy, Jimmy Horton, Mary Alice Horton, Rusty Oxford, Gene Green, Shane Morris, J. R. Woods, John Webb, Tommy Webb, Marilyn Mimbs, Johnny Webb, Jimmy Grant, Joel Kea, Harold Mullikin, and James Kersey.
