Robert Ray Muns, 75
Mr. Muns was born in Summertown and was the youngest son of the late Maggie Ophelia and Harmon M. Muns. He was a 1948 graduate of Summertown High School. He attended Columbia Commercial College in Columbia, South Carolina and later attended the El Centro Junior College, in Dallas, Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in January 1950, and served in such foreign countries as Germany, French Morocco, Greenland, and South Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, The Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal for three bronze loops, The Army Occupation Medal for Germany, The National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was an Air Force Military Historian, and served with such units as the 22nd Fighter Bomber Squadron, which was the home of the "Skyblazers", the F-84 World Renown Jet Air Force acrobatic team in Europe, and the fore runner of the now F-16 Jet Air Force acrobatic team, the "Thunderbirds." He served in the Strategic Air Command (SAC), the United States Air Force Security Service (USAFSS), and the Tactical Air Command (TAC). He retired from the Air Force after completing 20 years of active military service, on July 1, 1970. Upon his retirement, he became an Office Manager with J.P. Awalt & Co. in Dallas, Texas. He later moved to League City, Texas, and became a newspaper Distributor for the Houston Post, until his return to the Summertown area in 1987 when he became a distributor for both The Augusta Chronicle and Savannah Morning News. In 1990, he became the mayor of Summertown and served for two years. He served with Emanuel County Board of Education as a school bus driver. He retired after 10 years of service. He was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church and a former active member of the Summertown Baptist Church, the Adult Sunday School Class, the Church Choir, and the Bark Camp Church Association, the Association of American Retired Persons (AARP), the financial officer of the American Legion Post #103, in Swainsboro and a member, past president, vice president, secretary and treasurer of Summertown Homemakers Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Lajoie. Survivors include two sons, Mark M. Muns of Grand Prairie, Texas; and David T. Muns of Argyle, Texas; a stepson, Robert A. Goddard of Kenosha, Wis.; two daughters, Anita L. Weichert of Blun, Texas; and Belinda Rae Collins of Harrisonville, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Lillian Muns Bishop of Summertown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building Fund, Summertown Baptist Church, c/o Mrs. Helen Rogers, 123 Underwood Loop, Swainsboro, Ga. 30401, or Long Creek Primitive Baptist Church, 5 Don Farrow, 122 Lawrence Sherrod Road, Midville, Ga. 30441. Family will receive friends Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007 between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. at the Tomlinson Funeral Home. Tomlinson Funeral Home has charge of the services.
