American Legion sponsors scholarship contest The American Legion is inviting high school students to participate in a locally held oratorical contest with scholarship prizes at the national level exceeding $50,000. "Georgia has had several national winners in the past and will have winners again," said local contest coordinator Al Jones. Students are eligible to participate if they are citizens or lawful residents of the United States. Contestants must be classified as high school, public or private, or state accredited home schooled. Teachers and principals are urged to inform students about this opportunity which is accredited by the National High School Principals Association. "This contest is for students who seek academic challenges outside the classroom and presents an opportunity to win college scholarship monies," Jones stated. "Locally, winners could also receive cash prizes up to $150. If the first place winner continues to advance through district, area, and state levels, that student could win well over $1,500 in cash prizes. The state winner will travel to Indianapolis for the national contest. All expenses to national and a chaperone are paid. The national winner could be invited to the White House to be congratulated by the President," according to Jones. The prepared oration of 8-10 minutes must be on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution. There will also be an extemporaneous speech of about four minutes on specific parts of the constitution including impeachment; privilege and immunities of members of Congress; and the 14th Amendment. Contestants speak without notes or any other aids. A student should be able to devote at least twenty hours for preparation. The local contest will be held in late January. For more details, contact Al Jones at 763-2694 or Robert Muns at 237-4199 as soon as possible. Teachers are also urged to call for more information.
