Why the mass firings? DEAR EDITOR: After having stated some opinions, in the not so distant past, about issues concerning parking in downtown Swainsboro, I have managed to bite my tongue, or, in this case, control my fingers on numerous occasions. Again, as in my last letter to the editor, I will point out the wrong doing of a new employer to the community of Swainsboro. It is sad when a company like PharmaCentra comes in and randomly, out of nowhere, shocks its employees with arbitrary firings. I know that in the U.S., employees can be fired at will. What I do not understand is why a company chooses to do a mass firing of employees for no apparent reason. Shouldn't an employee receive just cause for dismissal? Of course employees receive partial protection through laws against discrimination by race, religion, national origin, age, or disability, but yet this still leaves employees vulnerable to arbitrary dismissal that is not discrimination related. Even employers essentially have the right, according to our laws, to fire someone on the spot, for no reason. Individuals can be fired without consideration of how well they are performing, their years in their job, or past loyalty to the company. It is widely assumed that employers are required to act in a responsible way in terminating employees. Unfortunately, on Oct. 29, this was not the case. A one-minute meeting transpired to the employees being asked to move to the center of the office so that all could hear what was about to be said. At this point, we were then told to clear our desks of our belongings and exit the building because our positions with the company had been eliminated. At least I now know I won't have to ever deal with that particular work place for the rest of my life. But, unfortunately, our community does. Our community has to suffer from a company that comes in and hires people, then randomly constructs mass firings. We do not need this type of business for Swainsboro or any other place.
