Dekle exhibit featured at Kalmanson Gallery

ART BY DEKLE
The award-winning work of 38 disabled artists throughout Georgia, including a student winner from Twin City, will be on display Nov. 10-30 at the Georgia Artists with Disabilities, Inc.'s 23rd annual statewide tour and exhibit at The Kalmanson Gallery, Emanuel Arts Council, corner of Green and Church streets. The exhibition will open from 5-8 p.m. with the Second Saturday Art Stroll.

The student winner is Ana Dekle, the 16-yearold daughter of Sonny and Ollie May Dekle of Twin City. She won the Student Award for "Self Portrait" in pen and ink. She is an eleventh grader at Emanuel County Institute and plans to attend college to study art.The 46 entries in the 2007-08 tour and exhibit include paintings, photographs, clay pottery, mosaics, eggery and sculptures. The ninecity tour kicked off in Baxley in September and ends in Tallulah Falls in July 2008.

"Since its founding, Georgia Artists with Disabilities has helped hundreds of disabled artists attain the recognition and commercial opportunities they had not enjoyed previously," said Annette Ford, chairperson of Georgia Artists with Disabilities. "As a result, each of these individuals has been able to continue to develop his or her special means of artistic expression. Their work is more than a symbol of achievement for the members of the disabled community. It is a gift of beauty that is meant for all of us."

Judging the exhibit entries were Stella Lange, an Atlanta artist who paints in watercolor and oil; Barbara Bailey, adjunct professor in art appreciation at Reinhardt College, Woodstock campus; and Pet Webster, former teacher of the arts in public schools in Pennsylvania who currently teaches watercolor painting to adults.
