Thomas Jefferson blanks DEA
The Jaguars high powered running attack, led by junior Derrick Mathis, produced 471 of the teams 516 total yards on offense and all eight touchdowns. Mathis ran for four touchdowns, and finished with 247 yards on just 11 carries. He also kicked six extra points giving him an individual total of 30 points in the contest. DEA, while unable to come away with any points, did have some bright spots including the play of senior Joseph Sparks who ran for 136 yards on 16 attempts. Sparks who was named as Statesboro Herald's Player of the Week last Wednesday, ran for 216 yards in the win over Nathanael Greene a week ago. As a team, DEA finished with 208 yards and 13 first downs. Mathis scored all of his touchdowns in the first half as he hit pay dirt on runs of 6, 35, 14 and 49 yards while the Jaguars built a 36-0 lead. Senior Tom Oglesby scored on a six yard run and also ran a two point conversion following an off sides penalty on the PAT after the second Mathis score. Oglesby scored on a 33 yard run in the third quarter before Josh Godbee tallied from 24 yards out and Logan Perdue scored on a 12 yard run with 6:40 left to play to complete the scoring. The Eagles were able to move into Jaguar territory on four different occasions in the first half, but failed to capitalize each time. Derek Lindsey returned a kickoff 56 yards to the TJA 34 to set DEA with good field position on their first possession. But that opportunity stalled five plays and one defensive pass interference penalty later at the Jags 20. On DEA's second possession, the Eagles moved from their own 27 to the TJA 23 as quarterback Brandon Blount connected with Lindsey twice and Marshall Blount once. But that drive also stalled when DEA was unable to get the necessary yardage on fourth down. The result was the same on the next DEA possession as they moved from 35 to 35 with Blount finding Lindsey and Sparks and then an 18 yard run by Sparks. Then just before the half, a pass from Blount was caught by Matthew Fordham off a tip at the Thomas Jefferson two yard line as time expired. In the second half, Lindsey had another fine kickoff return as he strolled 55 yards down to the TJA 38. But the Eagles squandered that opportunity by fumbling the ball away two plays later. Marshall Blount led the defense with nine tackles, Derek Lindsey finished the game with seven stops, and Hudson Johnson recorded six tackles for DEA. DEA will close out the home portion of the schedule this Friday night when Griffin Christian visits Stillmore for a 7:30 contest. This was also be the final region game of the year and all senior athletes will be recognized at halftime.
