The lottery was a mistake

DEAR EDITOR:

Years ago, before the state of Georgia voted on having a lottery, a woman stood up in church pleading us not to vote for it. She had moved to Swainsboro from another state. She said she had seen her state go from being very prosperous to a state of shambles.

She said people had believed in the dream of becoming instant millionaires. Poverty was now on every street corner. People lost their homes, cars and dignity. Pawn shops and banks were repossessing valuable property. She said the devil had tricked the people and he had won. The streets were filled with homeless people.

After the state of Georgia approved the lottery, HOPE scholarships came into being. Georgia's lottery became the fastest growing one in history. Politicians praised our education and our sudden regained prosperity because of the lottery.

As I look around now, I realize the lottery was a mistake. Ask anyone who is now hooked and addicted to Cash 3, instant scratch-offs, etc. Their money could be better spent. They have lost and will continue to do so.

I wish that years ago when that woman who stood up in church pleading her cause, she was taken more seriously. She was right. POLLY JOHNSON Swainsboro
