Arts in Emanual
Once upon a time (well actually at the beginning of the year), when we were choosing new officers, I was asked if I would serve as president. Under the impression that I would be disqualified, I pointed the Artists Guild jobs that I all ready was doing. Instead the response was that I could be Empress. So here I am, Her Royal Majesty Queen Joan (uhm- that does not sound very regal, I'll add my middle name). Queen Joan Myrtle. Nope that was not any better at all. I guess that you all had better just keep calling me "Joan" and you needn't bow or curtsy either. The Guild's major achievement each year is Arts Emanuel which took place recently. We are very proud of this year's event. We worked very hard to put together a full day of art for our community. We provided many hands-on art projects (I should say interactive art in case someone named Art wonders what he missed). We had an Artists Market set up on Patriot Square and art exhibits at several venues. We also had some very good entertainment. (I am not using the royal 'we' or the editorial 'we'- this is the group we. We all put a lot of effort and time in to ensuring this is the best possible arts festival). Local dance studios, Stephanie's Dance Explosion, Adrian School of Performing Arts, First Steps, and the Southern Dance Connection provided their usual excitement, color and fun. They were followed by B4 +1 (Amanda and Brandon Bell with Cassie Brantley, Logan Brantley plus Justin Bell). Donald Jenkins sang some Sam Cooke ballads. Later in the evening, The Afromotive from Asheville, N.C. rocked the Boneyard with its "nuafrobeat." Art is still on view at Gallery RFD, 114 West Main, Jack's Java Cove and Brantley's Billiards. The Artists Guild work at the Kalmanson will be exhibited until November 2. This unique show features art trading cards which are 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches in size. With work by Emanuel Artists Guild members and invited guests, this show has 356 pieces. For the festival only, Emanuel County student art was on display at the Boneyard and the Guild exhibited work in the building on West Main and North Green. The Main Street Cruisers had cars on North Green Street. We hope that they will join us next year with this very special art form. Combined with the Second Saturday Art Stroll, this year's festival was indeed a very full day. I hope that you were able to enjoy some of it with us. We will be discussing next year's event. If you would like to see something different or if there was something that you particularly enjoyed, please let us know. Suggestions or criticism are welcome, call me or e-mail me. And thus, the Empress has spoken. Joan Dunn is an artist, member of the Emanuel Arts Council Board of Directors and President of the Emanuel Artists Guild. She is interested in learning about creative arts efforts throughout the area. Contact her at joan-of-art@nctv.com.
