2008 tax due date set
By JACQUIE BRASHER

At its meeting Monday night, Emanuel County Commissioners reported that Tax Commissioner Sandra Wright had withdrawn her request for a Dec. 1, 2008 deadline for county property taxes. However, Wright informed the board that next year's taxes, by law, will be due by Dec. 20 and not Dec. 31.

Chief Tax Appraiser Darryl Gray asked the board to approve purchase of new computers, software and laser printer to accommodate the large digitized map files being downloaded from aerial photography. Gray said the current computer system at 1 gigabyte was inadequate to support the large TIF image files. He said a system of 4 gigabytes was needed. Cost of the new system and software would be a little over $11,500. The request was approved.

Fire Chief Mike Strobridge was present to request five new radios for Swainsboro Fire Department to be used in outlying areas of the county. Chief Strobridge said the current wattage of existing radios was insufficient and signals could not be heard in these outlying areas. Radios are needed for Swainsboro, Oak Park, Adrian, Summertown and Garfield. Commissioner David Oglesby asked if Cross-Green could be included in the request. Commissioners approved the purchase of six radios to cover all these areas at a cost of about $1,400. Funds will be provided by SPLOST.

In other business, commissioners approved:

• Request of Jimmy D. Peebles for the closing of a portion of Cougar Road, which is 600 feet from the intersection of Parham Road and Cougar Road.

• $250 donation to Kiwanis Club to be used in the 2007 Octoberfest. This is a budgeted item.

• $500 donation to American Red Cross, Savannah Chapter. This is a budgeted item.

• Authorized County Administrator Ezra Price to seek bids for the paving project of Mt. Shady Church Road.
