Georgia Division President Mrs. Roger V. Locke presented the Cross of Military Service to Mr. Joiner, who by faithful devotion and patriotic military service to country in time of war, exemplified courage and loyalty which reflected honor upon himself as well as his Confeder- ate ancestor. Cecil Joiner enlisted in the US Army October 18th 1935 at Ft. Screven, Georgia as a private. He enlisted May 3rd 1938 in the US Marine Corps and was discharged May 14th 1946 as a Sergeant. He rendered service in the Asiatic Pacific, Samoa, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, New Caldonia, and Alaska. Private Henry Frank Joiner, the great-grandfather of Cecil Judson Joiner, enlisted in Emanuel Rangers, Company K, 28th Regiment CSA at Camp Stephens, Georgia on September 10th 1861. Private Henry Joiner was wounded in the right lung during the Battle at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia May 10th 1864. He died October 8th 1864 at General Hospital No. 9 in Richmond, Virginia. Guests from Emanuel County attending the ceremony of bestowal were: Mrs. Doris Clemens, Mr. Cecil Lewis, Mrs. Deloach Martin, Dr. and Mrs. Edward Bolton, Mr. and Mrs. William Sasser, Mr. and Mrs. Lacy "Butch" Frye III, Mr. Robert Thomas, Rev. Emory Fennell and Dr. Fred D. Womack. Emanuel Rangers No. 2318 UDC members attending included: Mrs. Homer S. Durden III, Mrs. Elaine C. Thomas, Mrs. Emory Fennell and Mrs. Fred D. Womack.
