Council upholds application denial At its Monday night meeting, Swainsboro city council affirmed its decision to deny an alcoholic beverage license for Ashok Patel for his store Ankit, Inc. at 228 Lewis Street (formerly Food Basket.) Speaking for Mr. Patel was Nicole Jones, who appealed the previous decision and told council that the establishment had been cleaned up. Speaking against the establishment selling beer and wine were some members of the Emanuel County Ministerial Association. There were also a few members of the local community speaking in favor of the business selling beer and wine. After the unanimous vote to uphold council's decision, Mayor Charles Schwabe informed the crowd that the vote was reflective of "local government at work" and that they had done all they could do. In other business: • Council approved the sale of Northland Cable Company's franchise to Green River Media and Communications. • Council approved the first reading to amend the zoning code to change signage regulations for the Downtown Historic District. • Council approved the adoption of updated building codes. • Police Chief Shuman said interviews for a new police officer will be conducted in two weeks. • Mayor Schwabe recommended that council attend a fall retreat at the Vinson School of Government later this year. • Councilmember Cleve Edenfield said there had been several leaks across the city due to the aging system. All leaks are being repaired.
