Atlanta Pops to perform at EGC

ATLANTA POPS ORCHESTRA
The Atlanta Pops Orchestra, under the direction of conductor John H. Head, will be in concert at East Georgia College on Thursday, Sept. 13. Sponsored by the Vision Series, a privately-funded initiative that seeks to bring programs of educational and cultural enrichment to the college and its constituency, the Atlanta Pops will perform twice, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The 11 a.m. performance, which begins the 2007-08 EGC Vision Series events, will be a 50-minute show, while the 7 p.m. program will be a full concert with intermission. The performances will be held in the auditorium of the Luck Flanders Gambrell Center on campus. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

This year, in addition to its normal complement of musicians, the orchestra will feature the unique and energetic Bobby Yang and his Unrivaled Players. Violinist Bobby Yang is reinventing the sound of the acoustic violin. Melding his classical training with years of Colorado mountain woodshedding, Yang's inimitable sound combines the passion of a violin with the dirt of a bluegrass fiddle and the rawness of a guitar. He has surrounded himself with musicians who share his madness, his Unrivaled Players, while touring nationally. When Bobby Yang isn't performing with his Unrivaled Players, he is performing with actor Kevin Costner as the full-time fiddler in Costner's new band, Modern West.

The Atlanta Pops has expanded its role in music making by actively seeking more corporate, community, school and touring opportunities. The orchestra performs a wide variety of programs and accompanies guest artists while continuing to feature its own soloists. The Atlanta Pops accompanied Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph, Floyd Cramer, Charlie McCoy, Danny Davie, and Johnny Gamble on a 1983 Epic recording, and they also recorded "Rhapsody in Blue" and eight more Gershwin classics in 2002.

The 11 a.m. performance is entitled "A Program of Classical and Classical Rock Music" and will perform selections such as Eine Kleine Rock Music, Nocturne in Eb, Purple Rain, Feelings, Bohemian Rhapsody, Kashmir, 12th Street Rag, and Lone Ranger Theme. The more extensive performance at 7 p.m. will include some of the same selections in addition to Tom Sawyer, Big Band Salute, Barber of Seville Overture, Bittersweet Symphony, Spanish Eyes, and a television Western medley. Both performances are free and open to the public.
