Inadequate parking

DEAR EDITOR:

As a life-long resident of Emanuel County I am well-aware that there is very little parking available in downtown Swainsboro. What I do not understand is the conflict that has to arise, daily, because of parking areas.

Is it fair that employees should have to park 1 or 2 blocks from their place of employment just to satisfy the needs of another business? Isn't that business capable of providing their customers with adequate parking?

I feel that if a business is going to want to provide parking for their customers only then that business should invest in signs that designate parking for their establishment only. The entire parking area behind Swainsboro City Hall is not to my understanding a reserved area. I have only seen several parking signs which are either for handicap or for timed parking, which are very few.

In today's society it is reasonable to park a vehicle in the closest available parking area without reoccurring conflict. What ever happened to the concerns of every businesses employees? Could the city not provide more parking areas for reasons like this? Clearly when something that is supposed to be somewhat penal in nature can instead be used as a quick source of revenue by any community results in a startling lack of respect for people's rights.

It then becomes corrupt and needs to be addressed. And it is our moral and legal right to express dissatisfaction. Then we have days like last Wednesday morning when it is pouring down rain. No one wants to park 2 or 3 blocks from their place of work and have to walk in the rain. There are so many businesses around town that have signs up stating that their parking lot is for their employees and customers only.

Is it just too costly for complaining businesses to invest in designated parking lot signs? I'm sure they would not like to be told to move from a parking space that is not even reserved or marked. I'm also sure they would not want to have to walk about 2 blocks just to get to work when it is pouring down rain outside. I'm just wondering why there isn't a better parking system in place for ALL employees, customers and business owners who live, shop and work in Swainsboro? REBECCA BRANTLEYMANNS Swainsboro
