Reader 'appalled' by Woods

DEAR EDITOR:

I was appalled last week when I read The Blade's lead article on Ray Woods. He is alleged to have used a dummy company called The Therapy Group to bilk taxpayers out of $237,798.25 that should have been given to our school children.

Daily, as a psychiatrist, I turn down parents whose children desperately need therapy and psychiatric treatment, only because I am the only full-time private psychiatrist in Swainsboro who sees children and my schedule is often packed. Yes, Mr. Woods--I do do the therapy for which you are billed. Mr. Woods' company name seems like a cruel joke on our children. Emanuel and surrounding counties are desperate for child psychiatrists and therapists.

Also, I've learned that many of our children are not allowed to bring textbooks home at night to study because there aren't enough to go around.

Would $237,798.25 have bought enough books for each child? How can we instill a love for reading and books if we don't supply books?

I don't have a child in the school system, but I have plenty of patients who are in the system and I am angry for them. I'm also a taxpayer--where's my $237,798.25, Mr. Woods?

KATE O'LEARY, M.D. Swainsboro
