County to help 4-H acquire minibus Emanuel County Commissioners Monday night approved footing up to $25,000 for a minibus for Emanuel County 4-H. Emanuel County Extension Director Mark Crosby was present to ask for the county's assistance in acquiring a van, which could cost over $43,000. Crosby said the existing van has 97,000 miles on it and repair bills are mounting. Additionally, state license requirements prohibit vans to carry more than 10 passengers and the existing van currently seats 15. Commissioner Brad Hooks suggested that Crosby look into purchasing a van that used diesel fuel instead of gasoline. Crosby said he thought a diesel vehicle could cost an additional $3,500. Crosby also introduced Marney Dekle, the new Family and Consumer Scientist. Dekle replaces Mary White, who retired in May, and her duties will be shared with Candler County. She begins work effective Sept. 1. Harvey Stevens was present to ask commissioners to consider paving the remaining portion of McLeod Bridge Road from Parham Road to Old McLeod Bridge Road. He said the road was supposed to have been paved 10 years ago. Stevens was informed by commissioners that the road was "on the priority list" but that the state had reduced its funding for road paving. Commissioner Keith Thompson said the board was looking at "other options" and that, currently, "roads and litter" were the county's top priority. In other business, commissioners: • Announced a vacancy on the Region 5 Regional Planning Board, Division of Mental Health, Development Disabilities and Addictive Diseases. Interested persons are asked to contact County Administrator Ezra Price. • Approved renewal of the agreement between commissioners and Emanuel Medical Center to administer and manage the Emergency Medical Services in the county. • Adopted a resolution approving and adopting The Emanuel County Joint Comprehensive plan, including the approved Community Agenda, as Emanuel County's official local comprehensive plan under the Georgia Planning Act of 1989, as amended, and thus replacing its previous comprehensive plan adopted in 1991. Further resolving that the commissioners notifiy the Heart of Georgia Altamaha Regional Development Center, Georgia Department of Community Affairs and other appropriate agencies. • Approved the right of way agreement for a proposed new road at East Georgia College. (Funding from the county and right of way certification are not required.) • Acknowledged that they read and support the requirement of the ACCGGroup Self-Insured Workers Compensation Fund's Loss Control and Safety Incentive Discount Program. A 7.5 percent discount on the program should be received.
