DEA football practice under way Football practice for the 2007 season is underway at David Emanuel Academy. The Eagles, under the direction of new head coach James Ferry, took the field on Monday, July 30 for a week of conditioning in shorts and helmets before donning the full gear Monday morning Aug. 6 as camp week began. 19 players arrived on Sunday night to set up housing in the school gym for the week long session. "It went well," said Ferry who was named as DEA's head football coach and athletic director in March, coming over from Metter High School. "We gave a good effort and we will have to play that way consistently because its iron man football here with just 19 players on the roster." Ferry says that the focus of the camp will be on the basic fundamentals of football. "We won't attempt to put in our whole package this week. We just want to be better at blocking and tackling by Friday." Coach Ferry will run the split back veer option attack on offense and base out of a 4-3 on defense. Ferry also brought a new strength and conditioning program to the weight room of the Stillmore private school. The program was a big hit with the football players as 15 of the 18 members of the team have met the required number of workouts during the summer months. "This program is designed to build strength in a quick, hard workout of 30 to 45 minutes," Ferry explained. "We want them to get their number of workouts (25) and still have time to enjoy the summer." The Eagles, who finished 5-6 in 2006 and missed the playoffs, will begin regular season play on August 30 when they host arch rival Bulloch Academy. The Thursday night non region GISA affair will kick off at 7:30.
