Hanson to feature art at Kalmanson
Serving First United Methodist Church, Hanson and her husband of 47 years, Rev. J. David Hanson, lived in Swainsboro from 1985-1989. She was born in Columbus and now lives on St. Simons Island in a house she helped design. The Hansons have two sons, Jay and Jeff; and four grandchildren, Cole, Summer, Brooks and Wesley. Hanson says, "Life in general, my spiritual life, and my art are inseparable. When I moved to Swainsboro in my mid forties, not knowing art was about to open up for me, I remember praying, 'Lord, when I look, let me really see.' That was my prayer theme. I wanted to see and be aware of what was going on around me and in me- not later in hindsight, but in the present. That must have been an appropriate prayer at the time of the birthing of my painting experience because Robert Henri in The Art Spirit informs us that seeing is much more difficult than expressing." She began painting seriously after an art class with Neil Kalmanson at East Georgia College (Emanuel County Junior College). Her portraits hang in many private homes. Her work is also on display at East Georgia College, Wesleyan College and the Harriett Tubman Museum in Macon. She attended Wesleyan College and graduated from Drew University in Madison, N.J. with a degree in psychology. Her professional work prior to art was in education and social work. She has studied with Bill Hendrix, Ken Wallin, Marc Chatov, John Howard Sanden, and Daniel Greene in addition to Neil Kalmanson. In addition to the Hanson exhibition at the Kalmanson Gallery, the Second Saturday Art Stroll features artworks at Gallery RFD, Jack's Java Cove, 114 W. Main, Folds Photography, and Brantley's Billiards. Free live entertainment will be performed on the Bone Yard Pavilion at 8 PM provided by the Downtown Commission for Arts and Commerce.
