Medical staff concerns aired at Authority meeting
By JACQUIE BRASHER

At its monthly meeting Tuesday, July 31, Emanuel County Hospital Authority received, in executive session, a letter from a group of medical doctors and physicians concerning issues dealing with management of Emanuel Medical Center. The letter, signed by 12 doctors, cited specific problems with communication between staff and upper management at the hospital.

Chief of Staff Dr. James Ray said, "The bottom line is that there's been some miscommunication between the medical staff, administrator and the board. We are addressing the issues and we are confident that they will be overcome." He added that he and CEO Len Daugherty have spent several hours trying to discuss these issues. "We are working diligently to solve the problems of the hospital," said Dr. Ray.

Daughtry agreed that communcation between all parties was essential. "We've had some issues, but we've got it rectified," he said. "We're working together to get it corrected."

Mitchell Fagler, chairman of the Hospital Au- thority, said, "Emanuel Medical Center has always been blessed with a medical staff that is committed to the hospital, its employees and patients. The hospital authority welcomes their input and has pledged to them that their concerns will be addressed."

He added, "Like most rural hospitals in Georgia and across the country, Emanuel Medical Center is facing decreases in the amount of reimbursement it receives from Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance companies not to mention an increase in the amount of indigent care it provides for the citizens of Emanuel County. As a result, the hospital faces challenges that require difficult decisions. With the cooperation of the medical staff and our employees, we will face the challenges and Emanuel Medical Center will continue to be a vital resource for our community."

In other business, the Authority approved:

• Renewal of the 2008 EMS budget

• Renewal of the contract of Dr. Anthony Davis.

• Sale of the Franklin Road property.
