Dr. Mary Rose Baugh Bacon, 71
Dr. Baugh was a native of Emanuel County where she attended Emanuel County Institute (Class of '53). She was a graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia. She was married to the late Marvin H. Baugh for 34 years and had been a resident of Baldwin County since 1967. In 1957, she was among the first Women from the State of Georgia to accept a reserve commission in the U.S. Air Force, serving on active duty from 1957 until 1960. During a tour of duty in France, Captain Baugh was selected to promote inter-service cooperation between the several commands. In this role, she frequently escorted then-French President Charles de Gaulle. Dr. Baugh had a distinguished career as an educator, retiring as Professor Emeritus from Georgia College and State University in 1996 after 27 years where she served as a professor and coordinator of graduate programs in the education department. She remained active in teacher education until this year. She was recognized nationally as a pioneer in the development of freshman year experience curriculum and is well known for her role in childhood teacher education throughout the state. Dr. Baugh was also active in the local community serving on the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Recreation Parks and Allied Arts Commission for 24 years including a term as chairperson where she played a key role in founding the Little Fishing Creek Golf Course. She is also past chairperson of the Wesley Foundation Board, past board member of First United Methodist Church, past president Milledgeville Music Club, Georgia Master 4-H Club life member and Rotary Club. Survivors include her husband, Franklin C. Bacon of Milledgeville; son, Franklin W. Baugh and spouse, Patricia B. Baugh of Waycross; daughter, Rosemary B. Warren and spouse Russell Warren of Hartwell; son, James E. Baugh of Milledgeville; son, Marvin T. Baugh and spouse, Julia C. Baugh of Burke, Va.; grandchildren, Sydney Staley, Hannah Staley and Annabelle Warren of Hartwell; Connor, Cameron and Caeden Baugh of Burke, Va.; and Polly Rose and Wyatt Baugh of Waycross.
